Adidas Basketball is the underdog in the corporate family. With little recognition but beautiful, high-quality products, they approached us to design a concept store that could elevate the perception of their basketball collections.

what might flagship experiential spaces for adidas basketball and its five key design collections look like? how can we communicate the grandeur and excitement of the sport without resorting to sports retail cliches?

the ask

To bring their product mix under one roof,  Adidas Basketball asked Boombang to help envision a 'One Basketball' concept store as a first step to clarifying and unifying the brand architecture. The goal?  Earn brand love in the category.

my role

As part of a team of 4, I was responsible for the graphics throughout the space and helped make key conceptual decisions, also contributing to many of the fixtures, materials, flow, and form choices. I also set up and ran many of the renderings.

store concept one:

adidas knows movement.

Evoking the tension of two larger-than-life players cutting through the court, with everything on the line. This concept immerses visitors in an experience that seems to always have more to see; behind every corner, there's more to learn about Adidas Basketball.

The design encourages guests to move through a space that seems to never sit still - it runs, cuts, and jumps with iridescent shimmer that dances between warm and cool. The overhead lights, the high-set perimeter banner displays, and the oversized 'megatrons' invoke the feeling of standing center-court in a basketball stadium.

store concept two:

our court is our temple

With awe-inspiring scale that feels grand and timeless, monolithic forms and earthen materials, the 'temple' space was designed to embody the focused, meditative mindset of an athlete.  As you pass through each 'plinth', you enter a collection's unique personality and story.

The inner walls of the plinths are used for projection-mapped content to hype highlighted shoes, or used in conjunction with one another for a supergraphic display, knitted across multiple surfaces. Smoked infinity mirrors flank the passageways illuminating the way to shoppable areas with a sense of magic, immersion, and delight.
