Symbiome is a natural skin health company that strives to repair our skin microbiome's broken connections to nature by fermenting sustainably-harvested plants from the rainforests of Brazil. We were brought on-board to help them grow.

how might we overwrite the stigma of bacteria to tell the story of a brand whose mission is to repopulate the 80% of microbial diversity that has been lost from our skin since ancestral times? how can we responsibly credit the yanomami, an indigenous people from the brazilian amazon, whose knowledge & collaboration made this possible?

the ask

Aiming to expand their reach and improve brand awareness, Symbiome approached our team to support them over three horizons: near (improved storytelling), mid (e-commerce overhaul) and long term (category extensions).

my role

As the lead designer on the project, I served as the brand's steward and was responsible for designing and executing Symbiome's 2.0 website, drafting new copy to tell their story, and art directing a range of new product and marketing concepts.

art directed product videos

As a part of the revamp, we art-directed a shoot at Symbiome's San Francisco lab to help tell the brand story and generate a library of content for the company's socials. We also produced a 60-second intro for each product in the collection featuring CXO Elena Torano's famed enthusiasm and product knowledge.

revamped storytelling

In re-invisioning Symbiome's e-commerce home, we wanted to accomplish three main goals: drastically simplify the storytelling, make this brand with a rich narrative feel visually lush, and funnel traffic to hero products quickly and frequently.
